Cristiano Ronaldo‘s wife Georgina Rodriguez has reacted to his retirement from the Portugal national team, posting three crying-face emojis and a row of red hearts under his farewell video on Instagram.

Portuguese outlet Selfie reported that it was the first comment. At the time of writing, Georgina’s comment has garnered over 210 thousand likes.

Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed that his 23-year international career is over the day before Portugal were due to name their squad for the November Nations League games against Denmark and Wales. He finished with 234 caps and 146 goals, both men’s world records.

In the video, captioned “Portugal will always be in me,” Cristiano Ronaldo framed it as a decision of the heart. He claimed that he was going to hand the number 7 shirt back and admitted that he felt privileged to wear it for 23 years. He then added that the decision to retire was not an easy one to make.

He then addressed his family, and Rodriguez in particular:

“Thank you for understanding the absences, the sacrifices, and the moments when the national team had to take up a space that also belonged to you. If I made it this far, it was because we always walked hand in hand.”

The two married in a civil ceremony in Cascais on August 11, with their five children present. The farewell closes a difficult few months: he walked out of Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen on September 30, after being left on the bench for the 2-1 win over Norway. He said Jorge Jesus twice broke a promise over his playing time, and he was given a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine, backdated so he would have been available in November.

Georgina Rodriguez’s old statement about Cristiano Ronaldo’s retirement

Rodriguez had already put a rough date on Cristiano Ronaldo’s career. Backstage at Paris Fashion Week in March 2024, she was filmed telling another guest (translated from Spanish):

“Cristiano, one more year, then it’s over. Maybe two, I don’t know.”

Sports World and others reported it as a hint that his playing days were nearly over. He went on to play two more years, including a sixth World Cup this summer, which ended with Portugal’s last-16 defeat to Spain. Only the Portugal chapter has closed: he is still at Al-Nassr, sitting on 985 career goals according to Sporting News, with 1,000 in view. Her comment was about his whole career, not the national team, and it came two and a half years before they married.
