xAI’s chatbot is moving from answering questions to making phone calls and booking appointments on users’ behalf
Grok, the AI chatbot built by xAI and plugged into the X platform, can now call dental offices to check whether they accept a user’s insurance.
What users are reporting
The most recent example came on November 4, 2026. X user @ArthurMacwaters posted that Grok was on a call with a dental office, confirming whether the practice accepted his insurance.
His one-word verdict on the experience: “incredible.”
That post followed an earlier report from October 15, 2026. A Texas user posting as @Texas_Twins_Dad said Grok had located a dentist that accepted his family’s insurance. It then booked an appointment for his son through a web browser.
The two cases show slightly different muscles. The October example relied on web browsing: searching, confirming coverage details online, and completing a booking form. The November example involved a live phone call.
Elon Musk, who founded xAI, highlighted the broader feature set on November 3, 2026, one day before the call report. In a post on X, he described Grok researching doctors, making calls, and scheduling appointments in real time.
How it works, and what it doesn’t do
According to the research findings, there is currently no evidence that Grok is integrated with specific insurance carriers or dental practice software. It is not tapping into a back-end eligibility database. It is calling the front desk and asking, the way you would if you had twenty free minutes and a high tolerance for being transferred.
This approach has trade-offs. On the plus side, it works with any office that has a phone number or a website, with no partnership agreements required. On the downside, the answer is only as reliable as whatever the receptionist says on that call. Coverage confirmed verbally is not the same as coverage confirmed in writing.
What this means
The risks deserve attention. Privacy is the obvious one: an AI relaying insurance details over the phone is handling sensitive personal data. Accuracy is another. A misheard plan name or a vague answer from a busy receptionist could leave a user believing they are covered when they are not. There is also the question of consent and disclosure, including whether the person on the other end of the call knows they are speaking with an AI.
