For natural born goalscorers, not many awards have the same prestige as the European Golden Boot. Each season, the award is given to the player who racks up the most points. The points are determined by the number of goals scored multiplied by the league’s coefficient. The top five leagues (Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, Bundesliga & Ligue 1) have a coefficient of two, meaning that every goal is doubled. The league’s then ranked by UEFA between 6-22 are times by 1.5, whilst in all other top division leagues each goal is multiplied by just one.
Down the years some of the very best players have claimed the award with the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Kane adding it to their trophy cabinet. As we are early into the 2026/27 season, many players from smaller leagues that started earlier are near the front and trying to hold on to their spots against Europe’s most potent attackers. So prepare to see some prolific goalscorers who you may not have yet heard of, but could be set for big moves in the future. Here at Transfer marketwe take a look at the current standings.
