Rasmus Hojlund hit Cristiano Ronaldo’s famous ‘Siu’ celebration against Portugal, just one day after the 41-year-old left the camp under a cloud.
Ronaldo reportedly had a disagreement with manager Jorge Jesus after his reaction to being left on the bench vs Norway caused controversy last week. The Portuguese coach denied rumours of a rift, but Ronaldo then departed the camp just hours later.
He will now play no part in the final Nations League game of the international break against Norway on Sunday after missing the win over Denmark. Ronaldo’s Portugal future is now in serious doubt, with speculation he might retire.
Rasmus Hojlund Already Copied Ronaldo’s Celebration
It’s not the first time Hojlund has pulled out the same celebration as the Manchester United and Real Madrid icon. The two countries met in the Nations League in 2025, with Denmark winning 1-0.
Hojlund, with Ronaldo visible in the background, celebrated his goal just as the man himself would have. After receiving backlash and accusations of mocking Ronaldo, Hojlund quickly explained he did the gesture out of admiration.
He even labelled CR7, who he replaced at Man Utd in 2023, his ‘idol’. But how did Ronaldo see it? Did he take it as a disrespectful act, or was it all taken in good faith?
The Al-Nassr forward was quick to squash any suggestions that Hojlund was being disrespectful. Quizzed on the incident before the two teams met in the return fixture last year, Ronaldo said:
“Hojlund doing my celebration is not a problem. I know it wasn’t out of disrespect. I understand that not only him, but in all sports, there are people who celebrate like me. I hope that tomorrow he’ll be the one to see me celebrate!”
In typical fashion, the top goalscorer in football history went on to find the net against Denmark the day after, during a 5-2 victory. Despite taking himself out of contention, it’s likely Ronaldo was keeping tabs on how his country fared without him on Thursday night.
While he would’ve seen Hojlund equalise to make it 2-2 in the second half, Portugal ended up winning 4-2 thanks to goals from Vitinha and Joao Felix. Goncalo Ramos, playing in Ronaldo’s position, also got on the scoresheet.
Hojlund Explained His ‘Siu’ Celebration
After the aforementioned accusations that he was mocking one of the greatest footballers of all timeHojlund quickly put the record straight.
Speaking to Danish broadcaster TV2 in 2025, the 23-year-old stated: “It’s for my idol. It wasn’t to mock him or anything.
“I remember him scoring from a free-kick in 2011 when I went to watch the match, and since then I’ve been a huge Cristiano fan.”
