BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech tight end Ja’Ricous Hairston has been named a nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy, which recognizes the most outstanding college football player who began his career as a walk-on.

The award is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, a former University of Arkansas walk-on who became an All-American offensive lineman. The trophy recognizes players who demonstrate perseverance, hard work and determination in earning opportunities at the collegiate level.

Hairston, a 6-foot-2 senior from Bassett, has seen his role steadily increase from the Brent Pry era into the James Franklin era. So far this season, he has 6 catches for 81 yards and two touchdowns. Prior to the start of the season, Hairston noted his pass blocking abilities have improved thanks to the rest of the guys in the tight end room.

“This season has been the most fun season I’ve had in college football,” Hairston said recently.

The Burlsworth Trophy is presented annually by the Brandon Burlsworth Foundation. The 2026 finalists are scheduled to be announced Nov. 17, with the winner to be revealed Dec. 7 in Bentonville, Arkansas.

University of Virginia punter Daniel Sparks was also named a nominee for the Bulsworth Trophy.
