Jude Bellingham’s 50th Real Madrid goal was a fitting distillation of his time in Spain.
Collecting the ball inside his own half against Racing Santander, he drove into open space, lifted his finish over the advancing goalkeeper and rolled it into the empty net.
The goal put Madrid 2-0 up in a comfortable 3-0 victory and made Bellingham the first Englishman to reach half a century for the club.

The numbers
He has required only 154 appearances to get there, returning 50 goals and 37 assists since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2023.
Those numbers are remarkable for a player who has spent much of his career operating in midfield.
Bellingham has averaged almost one goal every three appearances for Madrid despite regularly being asked to collect possession deep, help with the press and carry the ball through the middle third.
His extraordinary first season remains responsible for almost half the total.
Bellingham scored 23 times during the 2023-24 campaign, when Madrid won La Liga and the Champions League.
His output has become less spectacular since he moved away from the advanced role he occupied during those opening months, but it has hardly disappeared.
Reaching 50 has taken Bellingham past Zinedine Zidane, the obvious comparison since the Englishman inherited Madrid’s No.5 shirt.
Zidane scored 49 goals in 227 appearances across five seasons. Bellingham has exceeded that total in 73 fewer games, although numbers alone cannot capture Zidane’s influence or his defining moments on the grandest stage.
England’s number one
Bellingham has also left Madrid’s previous English contingent far behind.
David Beckham and Laurie Cunningham both finished with 20 goals for the club. He is now closing on Isco’s 53 and Luis Figo’s 58, landmarks that once looked distant for a midfielder still only 23.
There are other figures that explain why Madrid already regard him as a senior figure rather than a developing talent.
Bellingham recorded his 100th victory on his 150th appearance, meaning two-thirds of his matches for the club had ended in wins.
He has scored nine Champions League goals for Madrid and could make more history against AEK Athens on Wednesday.

That appearance would be Bellingham’s 60th in the competition. At 23 years and 128 days, he would become the youngest player to reach the mark, beating the record set by former Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s 450 goals and Alfredo Di Stefano’s 308 remain in another realm.
Bellingham’s value, though, is not measured solely by whether he can pursue specialist forwards up Madrid’s scoring chart.
He creates, presses, tackles and dictates games while continuing to arrive in the penalty area at precisely the right moment.
The Racing goal ended a seven-match scoring drought, but it also reinforced the larger point. Madrid bought one of Europe’s finest young midfielders.
Three years later, they have a player whose output already compares favourably with some of the most celebrated names in their history.
