Barcelona made a spectacular start to the 2026/27 LaLiga season. The defending champions opened with a 5-0 victory away to Elche despite never really moving out of second gear and several of their World Cup players still some way short of peak fitness. They also did so without a traditional center forward following the departures of Robert Lewandowski, Ferran Torres and Marcus Rashford. The decision to use Raphinha as a false nine paid off, with the Brazilian scoring twice, while the other attackers also found their range.
Against Athletic Club in their first game back at Spotify Camp NouHansi Flick could largely stick with the team that cruised to victory at the Martínez Valero, although a few minor changes are possible. None are expected in goal or defense. Joan García is certain to start between the posts, while Eric Garcia and Xavi Espart are strong candidates to continue at fullback after both impressed. In central defense, the coach appears unlikely to break up the Christensen-Gerard Martín partnership, his most frequently used pairing during preseason. Pau Cubarsí still needs time to rediscover his best level.

In midfield, Marc Bernal is expected to keep his place alongside Pedri after Flick confirmed that Gavi will be left out of the squad as a precaution. The Canary Islander has followed an individual training plan since returning, and his introduction transformed Barça’s play against Elche. Rodri is expected to feature in the second half.
There could also be a slight adjustment in attack. Anthony Gordonwho supplied two assists on his competitive debut, could replace Karim Adeyemi on the left wing. Raphinha would remain the focal point of the attack, with Lamine Yamal on the right and Fermín López operating as the attacking midfielder.
Possible Barcelona XI: Joan García; Eric Garcia, Christensen, Gerard Martín, Xavi Espart; Marc Bernal, Pedri; Lamine Yamal, Fermín López, Anthony Gordon; Raphinha.
